    MSN pulls off a "Heist"

MSN going full-tilt towards becoming a media network, first Black & White and now...

    photo[Full Press Release here]

MSN Video will have the exclusive rights to stream the entire first two episodes of upcoming NBC drama series Heist under terms of an agreement between the “Peacock Network” and Microsoft Corp.

The first two episodes of Heist debut Wednesday, March 22 and 29, from 10 p.m.-11 p.m. (EST), and MSN Video can stream them as encores for one week after each episode premieres.

NBC will also provide MSN Video with a 16-minute special sneak-peek presentation of the debut episode that will launch Tuesday and run through Heist’s March 22 broadcast premiere.

Pretty cool.  I'll be on the road for the premiere...so maybe I'll check it out.

    Codename: "Rolling Thunder"

Business Week got its hands on a leaked memo written by outgoing MSN Senior VP David Cole.  The highlights...

    • Incredible progress being made...
    • Live.com has 3M unique users and the second highest Net Promoter score (how likely you would recommend the service to another user)
    • Windows Live Mail is now hosting 750,000 users; with a goal to hit 20M by June.  (roughly double the size of Gmail)
    • Windows Live Saftey Centre has completed 2M free scans!
    • Windows Live Messenger has 1.5M users!
    • "Over the next 3-6 months, we'll ship more innovative technology into the marketplace than during our entire 10-year history." (much of which has been years in the making...as MSN worked hard behind the scenes to develop massively-scaled backends to support the vision)
    • Windows Live Free Call (aka Windows Live Local Search Free Call *ugh*) is launching on March 13th.

...stay tuned to LiveSide.net for more information as all this sweet innovation begins to slam the net!

    Look Ma!

No ads!  Spaces just became a part of MSN Premium... http://join.msn.com/hotmailplus/features-std

    another busy couple of days...

I'm out in Houston and a bit disconnected during the day...just catching up here, and as I'm starting this post just got an email from Microsoft Beta that the new Windows Live Favorites beta has launched @ http://favorites.live.com  You can now create folders and add tags to your favorites for easy retrieval later.  I know a few of you that have or had MSN Explorer...sign in with this service and you'll see your Favorites from MSN Explorer displayed.  You can also synchronize them with Internet Explorer!  :)  A lot more going on there...so keep your RSS readers and web browsers pointed at http://www.liveside.net.

I haven't had a chance to dig into this yet...but Ray Ozzie has posted about a new Live Clipboard service @ http://spaces.msn.com/rayozzie/.  Sounds like an interesting proposal that I am sure will generate a lot of ink.  :)  It is exciting to see Microsoft so fully embrace blogging as a way to release news and information.

There is a search-related announcement expected soon...I'm a bit behind on news today, but I haven't seen it come out yet.

Of course we have the Microsoft Alexandria/Origami news coming out shortly as well...are you ready?

    MSN Travel re-launch!

Check it @ http://travel.msn.com.  They sure moved fast...last we heard it would be a few more weeks yet.  I believe this is the first new content site developed from start to beta under the new John Nicol era @ MSN.

As someone who travels quite a bit -- I look forward to giving this a full run-through or two.  I currently use ExpediaCorporate.com to manage my travel.  I don't think that will change, but glancing at the new site...I dig the FareTracker and the AJAX-y booking console that you can minimize in the upper right hand portion.  :)  Good job guys!  ...oooh and when setting preferences as to where you are located; as I started typing in Los for Los Angeles...it word wheeled and pulled up LAX!  :)  How cool!

...now...where is the MSN Travel team blog??!

EDIT/Update:  I found an MSN Travel "blog" with no content @ http://spaces.msn.com/MSNTravel/

w00t! Just got my Xbox 360...

Kinda jury-rigged my setup since I didn't really have room for it...but when I get back home for a substantial amount of time, I'll probably rearrange my room setup.  Then again, I'll be moving soon anyway.  :)  (staying local)

Talking about The Rebirth of Our Consumer Email Client

I'm going to be so dead today...must...sleep!

But first; here is the first post on the brand new 'morethanmail' blog talking about the new unified messaging consumer mail client from MSN & Windows Live!

    Quote

The Rebirth of Our Consumer Email Client

The last time you saw a free email client from Microsoft was Outlook Express 6, released with Windows XP. That was in October of 2001 and I was still in college. I used email to contact my professors, browsed the campus newsgroups for event updates, and even received a few spam messages here and there. For my needs nothing fit better than OE6 and I was happy. That was almost 5 years ago. The troubles of yesteryear are now distant memories. As I’ve moved forward so have the technologies around us. Words like Blogging and phishing were only uttered in small circles back then and TLA (three-letter acronyms) like RSS were in their infancy. Not anymore. Blogging and RSS looks like they’re here to stay and phishing is more dangerous than ever. Now is the time to add life back into my favorite free email client and we’re injecting a large dose of adrenaline to kick things back up.

There’s a ton of new features, a new face, and a fresh new start for our newly dubbed Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta (WLMDB). Those of us on the team have been working heads down on this for a long while now and you can’t imagine how eager we are to finally talk directly to you about it. Let’s start off with a small list of our features:

    • Integration with Windows Live Mail and Messenger – Get direct access to your Windows Live Mail e-mails without having to configure any server settings. Plus integrated Messenger contacts directly in the email client. (In case you’re confused by our new name just think Hotmail when you read Windows Live Mail and think of us when you read Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta. The Desktop part makes us special. )

    • Photo Mail – Photo Mail will let you send your favorite vacation pictures as thumbnails to all of your friends and family then automatically upload a larger version to MSN. Each thumbnail received will have a link to a much higher quality large image. This is a great feature that is only found in the MSN Premium e-mail client for paying MSN members. We’ve now taken this component and integrated it into WLMDB.

    • RSS Feeds – Our program managers, developers, and tester have worked hard with the IE7 team to integrate RSS feeds directly into Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta. You can now view and forward them as if they were regular emails. We will explore this feature more in upcoming blogs.

    • Anti-Phishing –WLMDB will warn you of malicious emails that try to steal your identity. We understand the threats lurking out there and we’re going to do out best to protect you.

    • Word Wheel – The feature with the weird name you won’t be able to live without. Search all of your emails in split-second times from any folder. I started using it a few months ago and now I can’t believe how I was able to search through thousands of emails without it.

    • Multiple accounts - We designed this to work with Windows Live Mail, but you can download any POP or IMAP e-mails into WLMDB. This way you can see all your accounts and e-mails from one organized place.

    • And there’s more! – This is just a short random list of some of our new features and no where close to covering all of the new stuff.

We're going to go into a small, managed beta with WLMDB in the coming weeks and when we're ready for more people to play with it we'll put up info on ideas.live.com so you can sign up for the beta.

Stay tuned in the next few days and weeks as different members of t

Windows Live Expo beta now available!

The Windows Live Expo beta, a free online marketplace from Microsoft, helps customers define their own marketplace universe.

    US only...

Now, I'm off to lunch and listen to the LiveSide.net interview w/ Phil Holden (who is a Global Director; not UK only like I mentioned in my previous post)...

    Ohhh snapola!

    http://www.liveside.net  <-- if you don't click it, you're crazy!

They just posted an interview with Phil Holden, a Director in the Windows Live UK team, and the first public bits of information on the new Windows Live Desktop Mail application...  = ]  Something myself, and a number of diehard MSN users have been clammoring for quite some time for.  I saw some prototypes of this a ways back...it is nice to see it coming to fruition!

Can't wait to just USE it now!  :)

...now to await the next release of Windows Live Messenger tonight...

Today is going to be a busy day...

...and GOOG has taken a hit.  Bummer.  ;-)  Keep an eye on http://www.liveside.net throughout the day...they are gonna be posting like mad.

Today's first bit of news is now up and running @ http://preview.local.live.com:
"This new feature provides a vivid flythrough experience for the user, especially in the downtown areas that the technical preview focuses on. The user appears seated at ground level, as if they were driving around the map themselves. The preview version aims to provide the team with feedback on the new feature and imagery, which supports the existing road, aerial and birds-eye views that the Live Local service already offers. The small rollout is mainly due to the vast number of images that are needed, reportedly over 10million for Seattle alone."

Microsoft Unveils Windows Vista Product Lineup

    Windows Vista Business
    Windows Vista Enterprise
    Windows Vista Home Basic
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    Windows Vista Ultimate

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone...especially after some sites like Neowin.net picked up on windowshelp.microsoft.com before it was ready for primetime.  :)  I look forward to clearing some of the air when I talk with people now that this is out...for some reason there was this sense out there that we'd see a bajillion versions of Vista at retail.

I like the realignment...it is more about what groups of users tend to do with their machines and less about what hardware you may or may not have.

What is in a name? [MSN Branding Confusion]

I've stayed out of it thus far.  I'm on the Metrolink heading home so I'll be brief.

After this post by LiveSide.net, tech media across the US picked up on the news.  MSN is "rebranding"; they twisted the original words on LiveSide.net.  The news spread across the bloggosphere with everyone seeming to have an opinion.

Today, GM of MSN John Nicol had a bit of a press tour.  He talked to both the AP which syndicated an article now available on hundreds of sites on the net, and IDG News Services.  The hilarity here is that both authors of these articles interviewed John Nicol to clear up the confusion...yet here are the titles of those two articles:

Ultimately...there is no "rebrand"...just a refocusing.  You won't see "MSN Media Network" under the butterfly in the near future...but make no mistake about it...MSN is becoming a network of media.  Stay tuned...lots of exciting stuff still to happen under the MSN brand!  Ultimately...this doesn't matter.  The only people who are truly confused are those who need to go out tomorrow night instead of staying home and reading the tea leaves (that includes me :P)

    The 2005 Santa Tracker!

I've been out and about so much these last three weeks...I forgot all about the Santa Tracking festivites that commenced today!  Pretty cool, MSNBC.com has a Santa Tracking blog up and running, detailing Santa sightings around the world.  Reports seem to indicate Santa was recently sighted swooping from the sky in the vicinity of St. Louis!  I had better put out my milk n cookies...  hehe
